I just finished my second quilt ever. This one is about one square yard (36 inches by 36 inches) and I made it for my niece's 2nd birthday . . . in September. Yup, I finished it a little early but I guess that just means I get to start the next one sooner than I thought I would (for a nephew's Christmas gift).
